Approved as a DO at a regional level in autumn 2001, this young denomination had already acquired considerable prestige as the Falset subzone of Tarragona DO. The land forms a horseshoe around Priorato, but the wines here have a clear identity of their own. The vineyards fall in spectacularly beautiful hilly countryside, and they are scattered between olive groves (producing excellent quality oil), forest and bare mountain peaks. Red wines made with blends of Garnacha, Cariñena and experimental French grapes can be of very high quality, with Cariñena lending the capacity to age well.
