Located in the province of Tarragona, the DO leaped to fame in the last decade after producers began to apply new technologies in their winemaking. Today these wines have become some of the best known not only in Spain but also internationally.
Priorato is located in the district (comarca) of El Priorat, in central southern Tarragona, an area characterised by its black slate soils.
The area is of volcanic origin, which gives its soils unique features. The bedrock, called llicorella, consists of reddish and black slate with small particles of mica – quartzite – that reflect and conserve the heat.
Priorato’s classic grape is the Garnacha Tinta, which may be found in most of the oldest vineyards. Also authorised are the Garnacha Peluda, Cariñena, Cabernet-Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet.
